JFK Terminals: The Walk From Security to Your Gate, Gate by Gate

JFK numbers its terminals up to 8 but only operates five of them: 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8. There is no Terminal 2, 3 or 6, and the gaps are not a numbering quirk you can ignore, because the five that remain behave very differently once you are inside. The walk from security to a JFK gate is published at 1-5 minutes in two terminals and up to 10-14 minutes in another. The airport prints that figure for each group of gates, and the spread between the easiest terminal and the hardest is roughly three to one.

That table is the most useful thing on the terminal pages and the least quoted. It is what turns “arrive two hours early” into an actual number for your gate rather than for the building, and it is published gate by gate. What follows is every terminal’s figures as the airport carried them in September 2026, alongside the two other things that now differ by terminal: whether its parking is open, and where a ride is allowed to collect you.

How far your gate is from security, terminal by terminal

Terminals 1 and 7 publish a single figure for every gate: 1-5 minutes from security. At Terminal 4 the airport lists 3-6 minutes at gates A3-A8 and 10-14 minutes at B42-B55. For Terminal 8 it publishes 6-12 minutes at gates 31-41, and for Terminal 5 a ceiling of 5-10 minutes.

The thirteen minutes that separate two boarding passes

Put the extremes side by side and the planning consequence is obvious. A passenger at Terminal 8 gate 14 is 2-4 minutes past the checkpoint. A passenger at Terminal 4 gate B50 is 10-14 minutes past it. Nothing about the ticket, the airline or the arrival plan tells them apart, and only one of them can afford to clear security at the last moment.

Within a single terminal the spread is just as real. Within Terminal 4 the published figures are 3-6 minutes for gates A3-A8 and 10-14 for B42-B55, according to JFK, so two passengers who queue together at the same checkpoint can be eight minutes apart at the far end of it. The same split appears at Terminal 8, where JFK publishes 2-4 minutes at gates 12-20 against 6-12 at gates 31-41.

Terminal 5 is the flattest of the large ones, which the airport lists as 3-5, 5-10 and 3-7 minutes across its three gate blocks. The odd result there is that gates 522-530 are closer to security than gates 508-521, so a higher gate number is not a longer walk. Anyone estimating by gate number rather than by the published table will get that terminal backwards.

Two terminals lost their parking, and both are still flying

The airport’s parking widget lists Terminal 1 Green and Terminal 7 Orange as “Closed (Use Terminal 8 Red Lot)”. The terminals themselves are open and operating. What closed is their parking, which is a distinction the wording does not make and which sends drivers to the wrong building.

The Terminal 8 Red Lot carries the redirection and prices it at a 24-hour maximum of $74 per the Port Authority, the cheapest of the terminal lots. The Blue Lot at Terminal 4 is the dearest, which JFK lists at $94, and its availability is “reduced during construction”, per the airport’s own advisory. The Yellow Lot at Terminal 5 sits between them, which the airport lists at $89 a day.

Anyone driving to a Terminal 1 or Terminal 7 flight is therefore parking at another terminal and riding back, which turns the published walk time into the second leg of a longer journey. The AirTrain that links every terminal and lot is free inside the airport, so the cost of that detour is time rather than money.

Where a ride collects you now depends on the terminal too

Rideshare used to be a single rule across the airport. It is not any more. JFK publishes that passengers “can generally be picked up and dropped off in front of their terminals”, then carves out two of the five: ride app pickup for Terminals 5 and 7 has moved to the Howard Beach AirTrain Station, with a start date of 05/02/2025 and an end date written as “Ongoing”.

The Terminal 7 row is not a typo on our side. The airport’s own card places its taxi stand “curbside at the departures level roadway” underneath a label reading “Curbside Arrivals, Outside Information Center”. Departures and arrivals are different levels, and the card asserts both.

What the walk table does not include

The figure is measured from security, not from the door. Nothing in it covers the queue at the checkpoint, the walk from the curb to the checkpoint, or the AirTrain leg if you parked at another terminal. A 14-minute gate at Terminal 4 is 14 minutes on top of everything that happens before it.

Security wait times themselves are not published on these pages at all, which is the single biggest omission for anyone trying to build a departure plan from official figures. Nor is there any published walking route between terminals: at JFK the terminals are connected by AirTrain rather than on foot, and the airport describes no pedestrian link between them.

The pages also age at different rates, which the site exposes in its own data. In September 2026 the Terminal 8 page carried a last-modified date of 1 September 2026, Terminals 4, 5 and 7 of 8 July 2026, and Terminal 1 of 22 April 2026. A figure read from the Terminal 1 page has been sitting there roughly four months longer than one read from Terminal 8.

Using the numbers on the day

  • Look up the gate, not the terminal. Gates at Terminal 4 alone range from 3-6 minutes to 10-14 depending on which pier the flight leaves from.
  • Treat 14 minutes as the planning ceiling anywhere at JFK. No published gate group exceeds it, and only Terminal 4’s B42-B55 reaches it.
  • Do not infer distance from gate number at Terminal 5, where gates 522-530 are published at 3-7 minutes and the lower 508-521 at 5-10.
  • Add the transfer if the flight leaves Terminal 1 or Terminal 7, because both send drivers to the Terminal 8 Red Lot at $74 for 24 hours.
  • Check the pickup point before booking a car home. Terminals 5 and 7 send arriving passengers to Howard Beach rather than to the curb.
  • Re-check anything read on the Terminal 1 page. Its published last-modified date of 22 April 2026 is the oldest of the five.

Editorial note: prices, schedules, and policies on this page were checked against the official sources named in the text in September 2026. Treat every figure here as a reference point rather than a quote: operators change fares and hours without notice, and many vary by season, by event and by demand. Confirm the current price with the operator before you travel. Westchester Ride does not sell tickets or parking and does not accept payment to rank any operator.

Common questions about the JFK terminals

Six answers, each taken from what JFK published on its terminal pages in September 2026.

How many terminals does JFK have?

Five, numbered 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8. There is no Terminal 2, 3 or 6 in operation, so the numbering runs to 8 without describing eight buildings. All five are linked by the AirTrain rather than by any pedestrian route.

How long is the walk from security to the gate at JFK?

The figure changes by terminal and by gate. Terminals 1 and 7 publish 1-5 minutes for all gates. Terminal 4 runs from 3-6 minutes to 10-14 minutes, Terminal 8 from 2-4 to 6-12, and Terminal 5 from 3-5 to 5-10 minutes.

Which JFK gate is the longest walk?

Gates B42-B55 at Terminal 4, published at 10-14 minutes from security. That is the highest figure in any of the five published tables, and roughly three times the 1-5 minutes that Terminals 1 and 7 publish for every one of their gates.

Can you walk between terminals at JFK?

JFK publishes no pedestrian route between its terminals. They are connected by the AirTrain, which is free within the airport. Any plan that assumes a walk between two JFK terminals is not based on anything the airport describes.

Do all JFK terminals have their own parking?

No. The parking widget lists Terminal 1 Green and Terminal 7 Orange as closed and directs drivers to the Terminal 8 Red Lot, priced at a 24-hour maximum of $74. Both terminals continue to operate flights; it is their lots that shut.

Does the walk time include the security queue?

No. JFK measures it from security to the gate, so it excludes the checkpoint queue, the walk in from the curb and any AirTrain leg. Security wait times are not published on the terminal pages at all.

JFK measured the walk to every gate and then left the queue in front of it unmeasured.
