Westchester to Madison Square Garden: The Route MSG Publishes

Madison Square Garden sits on top of Penn Station and publishes a two-transfer route for the Metro-North riders arriving from Westchester, checked September 2026. The train ride is the settled part of the journey. What happens after the train is not.

Westchester to Madison Square Garden | WestchesterRide

What follows covers one trip: Westchester County to 4 Pennsylvania Plaza, on 7th Avenue between West 31st and West 33rd Streets, and what the arena itself puts in writing for a passenger who steps off a train at Grand Central Terminal.

New Jersey and Long Island get a headline on msg.com, Westchester gets one sentence

The directions page for Madison Square Garden gives New Jersey its own headline and Long Island its own headline. Westchester gets one sentence, printed inside the paragraph about PATH trains, and that sentence sends Metro-North riders across town to Times Square before doubling back, checked September 2026.

Read in order on 1 September 2026, the section headlines on the Getting to Madison Square Garden page run Driving, Parking, Rideshare, Subway, Buses, Traveling from New Jersey?, Traveling from Long Island?, Access-A-Ride and Faster Entry With CLEAR. No headline names Westchester, Connecticut or Metro-North.

Long Island gets LIRR train schedules. New Jersey gets an NJ Transit schedule, PATH at 33rd Street/Avenue of the Americas, and NY Waterway service from Weehawken, Hoboken, Jersey City and Belford with a free shuttle to the arena, on a crossing the page calls as fast as 8 minutes to Midtown. Metro-North gets a clause.

Ranking arrivals by the space an operator gives them is a regional habit, mapped venue by venue in the comparison of transportation to every New York area stadium and arena.

What The Garden tells a Metro-North rider to do once the train reaches Grand Central

The instruction is one sentence, printed under the Subway headline: if you are arriving via Metro-North, you may take the Shuttle or the 7 train from Grand Central to Times Square and transfer to the downtown 1, 2, 3 trains to 34th Street/Penn Station.

Three services and two transfers, to reach a building the same page calls located directly above Penn Station. Right after that sentence the arena stops giving directions and links out to the MTA Trip Planner, which is where departure times, fares and the last train live. None of the three appears on msg.com.

The line designations there are pictures. Each number and letter reaches the file as alternative text on an icon, so a screen reader, or a machine summarizing the page, pulls 7 train and R train from an attribute rather than the prose, read 1 September 2026.

Which Westchester platform the trip starts from is a separate decision, with its own parking and drop-off rules, set out in the guide to getting to a Metro-North station in Westchester.

Six ways to finish the trip from Grand Central, against the arena’s own wording

One finish carries a route addressed to Metro-North riders. The rest sit elsewhere on msg.com, aimed at somebody else, and a Westchester rider has to borrow them. Every cell below quotes or paraphrases the venue, read September 2026.

Finish from Grand CentralWhat msg.com publishes about itTransfers in the arena’s wordingWhere it puts a riderBest for

Driving moves the problem rather than settling it, because the arena publishes no rate, no garage name and no address, a gap laid out in the guide to what Madison Square Garden publishes about parking.

The only step by step arrival The Garden prints begins on Tracks 5-31

Under the heading Directions for disabled guests traveling from Penn Station, the venue publishes a walk that begins at the Penn Station West End Concourse, Tracks 5-31. It is the one arrival on msg.com written as a sequence of steps rather than a list of lines.

To 33rd Street and 8th Avenue the list runs: elevator from the train platform to main level, the Track 17 elevator opposite the Track 17 stairs, Elevator PW-9 to 33rd Street and 8th Avenue, then the doors ahead to the corner and in through the 8 Penn Entrance. A second list reaches 31st Street and 8th Avenue by way of the Track 5 and 6 elevator and Elevator PW-3.

Both routes start on a concourse numbered for Tracks 5 to 31, where a Metro-North train from Westchester does not stop. No equivalent sequence exists for a guest arriving at Grand Central Terminal, checked September 2026, which leaves the arena’s most precise arrival writing addressed to somebody who came in on a different railroad.

Inside the building the wording gets blunter. Elevators and escalators sit in each of the four towers, A, B, C and D, with some wait time during busy ingress and egress, and guests with mobility concerns are told to use the tower elevators because escalators may be turned off at any time. Power driven mobility devices may not be operated on escalators at all, and the ceiling for accessible seating is a device no wider than 36 inches, or 3 feet, at a speed not to exceed 3 miles per hour.

The arena publishes a 48 hours notice for seating with movable armrests, and its Accessibility Services Department line, 888-609-7599, runs Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

The seat picks the door at Madison Square Garden, so the avenue matters before the subway

Doors are not assigned by name to the public. Your digital ticket will have information on which entrance to use based on your seating location, per Madison Square Garden, which makes the entrance a property of the seat, not of the street a rider surfaces on.

Three entrance names appear in text across msg.com, on two avenues. Chase Square opens on 7th Avenue between 31st and 33rd Streets. 8 Penn is at 33rd Street and 8th Avenue. The 8th Avenue Chase Entrances B and C carry the CLEAR lane. Two of the three wear the Chase name on opposite faces, and no sentence on the site separates them.

Accessible entrances are at 8 Penn and at Chase Square, per the accessibility page, which is the clearest statement the venue makes about which face admits whom.

The entrances page is a map image with one line of text beneath it, and the FAQ links to it as entrance options for events at The Garden during construction. Neither scope nor end date is published, checked September 2026, so a door verified in advance can move. The box office keeps standard hours of 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, closed on Sunday, and on event days stays open until 1 hour after the event begins.

Picking a finish by who is travelling, with the winner named

A guest who cannot use stairs should aim for the PW-9 walk to the 8 Penn Entrance, checked September 2026. It wins on named equipment, since the arena prints the elevator numbers and the exit corner. The catch: that sequence starts on the West End Concourse.

A ticket naming Chase Square is better served by 34th Street/Herald Square. The criterion is which face a rider lands on: msg.com publishes a one block walk west, and Chase Square opens on 7th Avenue, the near side of it. The catch: Herald Square never appears in the Metro-North sentence.

A ticket naming 8 Penn or the Chase Entrances B and C is better served by the arena’s own route to 34th Street/Penn Station. The criterion is authority: that finish is the one the Garden publishes for Metro-North riders, and it ends under the building.

A group arriving with a case wins by leaving the case behind, whatever the subway does. The arena states that it does not provide an area to check bags, coats or any other personal belongings, a rule unpacked in the guide to what fits under a Garden seat.

Arrival notes msg.com puts in writing for the trip in from Westchester

  • Doors are an event fact, not a venue rule. One event page checked on 1 September 2026 listed doors at 8:00 p.m. for a 9:00 p.m. start at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, and no page states a general opening time.
  • No taxi stand is named. The directions, FAQ, entrances and accessibility pages carry no taxi rank and no dispatch point, leaving the rideshare band on 7th and 8th Avenues as the only published curb.
  • Two msg.com pages answer the drop-off question differently: directions states there is no officially designated rideshare zone, while accessibility gives one point on 7th Avenue just north of 31st Street.
  • The Madison Square Garden Store in Chase Square opens at 10:00 a.m. and admits guests without tickets, which makes 7th Avenue a meeting point for a group arriving on separate trains.
  • Buses M4, M10, M16, M34 and Q32 end the published journey at 7th Avenue/Penn Station, the same face as Chase Square and the Access-A-Ride point.

Where a Westchester plan for 4 Pennsylvania Plaza comes apart

The costly failure is the return leg, and it fails before the event starts. No last train, no fare and no service pattern for Metro-North appears on msg.com, checked September 2026: the arena hands that question to the MTA Trip Planner. The timetable comes from the railroad, before leaving Westchester.

A second failure is treating the building as reversible. All exits are final and guests are not permitted to leave and then re-enter, with no emergency exception published. A bag left in a car ends the evening. Getting out has its own rules, covered in the guide to leaving Madison Square Garden once an event ends.

The third is the pair of stations one block apart. Penn Station and 34th Street/Herald Square are different structures on different avenues, and a rider who hears 34th Street and stops reading surfaces on the wrong face of the arena.

Editorial note: prices, schedules, and policies on this page were checked against the official sources named in the text in September 2026. Venues, airports, and transit agencies change them without notice; confirm with the operator before you travel. Westchester Ride does not sell tickets or parking and does not accept payment to rank any operator.

What Westchester riders ask before an event at The Garden

Six questions come up before a first trip in from the county, and every answer below is quoted or paraphrased from msg.com, read September 2026.

Does Metro-North go to Madison Square Garden?

No direct link is published by the arena. Riders are told to take the Shuttle or the 7 train from Grand Central to Times Square, then transfer to the downtown 1, 2, 3 trains to 34th Street/Penn Station. That is two transfers on the venue’s own wording, checked September 2026.

How long does the trip from Westchester to Madison Square Garden take?

No journey time, fare or timetable for any railroad appears on msg.com. The directions page sends that question to the MTA Trip Planner, and links out to LIRR and NJ Transit schedules for other markets. The number has to come from the operator, checked September 2026.

Which entrance should a Westchester rider use at Madison Square Garden?

The one the ticket names. Your digital ticket will have information on which entrance to use based on your seating location, per Madison Square Garden. Three doors appear in text: Chase Square on 7th Avenue, 8 Penn at 33rd Street and 8th Avenue, and the 8th Avenue Chase Entrances B and C.

Is there a step free route into Madison Square Garden from the train?

One is published, and it starts at the Penn Station West End Concourse, Tracks 5-31. Riders take the platform elevator to main level, find the Track 17 elevator, ride Elevator PW-9 to 33rd Street and 8th Avenue, and enter through the 8 Penn Entrance. Elevator PW-3 reaches 31st Street.

What does Madison Square Garden publish for Long Island and New Jersey arrivals?

More than it publishes for Westchester. Long Island gets a headline and LIRR schedules. New Jersey gets a headline, NJ Transit schedules, PATH at 33rd Street/Avenue of the Americas, and NY Waterway from Weehawken, Hoboken, Jersey City and Belford with a free shuttle, as fast as 8 minutes to Midtown.

Can you get off at 34th Street/Herald Square for Madison Square Garden?

Yes, and the arena publishes it. Take the B, D, F, M, N, Q and R trains to the 34th Street/Herald Square stop and walk one block west to The Garden, per msg.com. That option is printed for the lettered lines, not inside the sentence written for Metro-North riders.

An arena served by three railroads writes its clearest arrival for one of them, and the county with the shortest ride gets the shortest instruction. The venue settles the geography, the railroad settles the clock, so the preparation that pays is the seat, the avenue and the door printed on the ticket.
