Metro-North is the default way from Westchester into Manhattan, and the price depends on one thing: the fare zone of the station you board at. The tables below give the 2026 fare from each Westchester town with a station, plus the lower Connecticut stops on the New Haven Line, and the cheapest ticket for how often you ride.
A one-way peak Metro-North ticket from Scarsdale or White Plains to Grand Central costs $13.75 in 2026, and the same ride off-peak costs $10.25, according to the MTA fare table effective January 4, 2026.
Metro-North Fares from Westchester to Grand Central by Zone
Westchester stations fall into zones 3 to 6 on the Hudson and Harlem lines and zones 12 to 14 on the New Haven Line. The MTA prices every station in a zone the same, so a Larchmont rider on the New Haven Line pays exactly what a Scarsdale rider pays on the Harlem Line: $13.75 peak.

Towns Where the Choice of Station Changes the Fare
Elmsford has no station of its own and sits between two lines. Driving to White Plains puts a rider in zone 4 at $13.75 peak in 2026; driving to Tarrytown puts them in zone 5 at $16.00, per the MTA tables. On the 2026 monthly ticket the gap is $271.50 against $313.00, or $41.50 a month in favor of White Plains, according to the MTA.
Armonk has no station either; its riders drive to a Harlem Line station, and North White Plains in zone 4 costs $2.25 less per peak ride than Chappaqua in zone 5 under the 2026 MTA fares. Mount Vernon is split the other way: in the 2026 MTA tables, Mt. Vernon East on the New Haven Line is zone 12 at $12.25 peak, $0.25 below Mt. Vernon West on the Harlem Line. Station parking is run by each village or city, so a cheaper zone only wins if a permit or daily space is available there. Transportation around White Plains covers the station area.
When the Higher Peak Metro-North Fare Applies
Metro-North publishes the 2026 peak window this way: “Peak fares are charged during weekday rush hours on trains scheduled to arrive in NYC terminals between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. or depart NYC terminals between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. On Metro-North, peak fares also apply to weekday trains that leave Grand Central between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.”
Everything else is off-peak, including all day Saturday and Sunday and holidays. For a zone 4 rider, choosing a train that reaches Grand Central after 10 a.m. cuts the one-way fare from $13.75 to $10.25, a saving of $3.50 each way.
Which Metro-North Ticket Wins for Westchester Riders
In every Westchester zone of the 2026 MTA tables, the monthly ticket costs between 19.5 and 19.9 peak one-way fares, and the weekly ticket costs about 7. That gives a simple rule:
- Ten or more round trips at peak in a calendar month: buy the monthly. In zone 4 the MTA’s 2026 monthly is $271.50 against $275.00 for twenty peak one-way tickets.
- Four peak round trips in one week: buy the weekly. In zone 4 the MTA’s 2026 weekly is $96.50 against $110.00 for eight peak one-way tickets.
- Occasional trips: one-way, and off-peak when the schedule allows. Two off-peak rides from zone 4 cost $20.50 at 2026 MTA fares.
The comparison assumes peak travel; an off-peak-only rider in zone 4 needs 27 one-way rides at $10.25 before the $271.50 monthly pays off under the 2026 MTA fares.
What Metro-North Charges for Tickets Bought on the Train
Metro-North charges a “$7.75-8.50 surcharge for on-board sales,” according to the MTA in 2026. The table shows what that does to the one-way fare in each Westchester zone. Riders boarding at a station with no ticket machine are exempt, as are seniors, riders with disabilities, Medicare cardholders and active military. The agency also warns that riders who repeatedly buy or activate a mobile ticket on the train are charged an $8 surcharge after a series of warnings.
| Zone | Peak bought before boarding | Peak bought on board | Off-peak bought before boarding | Off-peak bought on board |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | $12.50 | $21.00 | $9.25 | $17.00 |
| 4 and 13 | $13.75 | $22.00 | $10.25 | $18.00 |
| 5 | $16.00 | $24.00 | $11.75 | $20.00 |
| 6 | $19.00 | $27.00 | $14.00 | $22.00 |
| 12 | $12.25 | $20.00 | $9.00 | $17.00 |
| 14 | $15.00 | $23.00 | $11.00 | $19.00 |
Buying in the MTA’s TrainTime app or at a station machine before boarding avoids the on-board surcharge and the $8 repeat-activation penalty.
Metro-North Fares for Families, Children and Seniors
Under the MTA’s Family Fare, “up to four children aged 5-17 ride for $1 each when accompanied by a fare-paying adult who is at least 18 years old,” and children under 5 ride free. Two adults and two children traveling off-peak from zone 4 pay $22.50 in total under the 2026 MTA fares: $10.25 for each adult and $1 for each child.
Seniors, riders with disabilities and Medicare cardholders pay about half the peak one-way fare; the 2026 zone 4 reduced one-way fare is $6.75, and the zone 6 fare is $9.50, according to the MTA.
Harlem-125th Street Costs the Same as Grand Central
The MTA’s 2026 tables price every Westchester fare “to/from Grand Central/Harlem-125th Street,” and both stations sit in zone 1. A rider heading to Harlem, the Upper West Side or Washington Heights can get off at 125th Street and pay exactly the same $13.75 peak fare from zone 4 as a rider continuing to Midtown.
A ride between Grand Central and Harlem-125th Street alone costs $7.25 peak and $5.25 off-peak in the MTA’s 2026 tables. Connections from Harlem-125th Street covers onward buses, including the M60 to LaGuardia.
Mistakes That Cost Westchester Riders Money
- Buying the ticket on board: in zone 4 the peak fare jumps from $13.75 to $22.00.
- Catching a train that reaches Grand Central at 9:55 a.m. instead of after 10 a.m. on a flexible day: that is the $3.50 difference between peak and off-peak in zone 4.
- Paying full child fares: up to four children aged 5-17 ride for $1 each with a fare-paying adult.
- Trusting fare figures from guides written before January 2026: the MTA’s current tables took effect on January 4, 2026.
- Choosing a station by distance alone: Elmsford riders pay $41.50 a month more from Tarrytown than from White Plains.
For airport trips that start on Metro-North, Westchester to JFK, LaGuardia, Newark and HPN by town lists the connection from Grand Central and Harlem-125th Street to each terminal.
Editorial note: prices, schedules, and policies on this page were checked against the official sources named in the text in October 2026. Treat every figure here as a reference point rather than a quote: operators change fares and hours without notice, and many vary by season, by event and by demand. Confirm the current price with the operator before you travel. Westchester Ride does not sell tickets or parking and does not accept payment to rank any operator.
In 2026 a one-way peak ticket costs $12.50 from zone 3 (Yonkers, Bronxville), $13.75 from zone 4 (Scarsdale, White Plains), $16.00 from zone 5 (Tarrytown, Chappaqua) and $19.00 from zone 6 (Peekskill, Katonah), according to the MTA fare tables effective January 4, 2026.
Peak fares apply to weekday trains scheduled to arrive in NYC terminals between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. or depart between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., and to weekday trains leaving Grand Central between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Weekends and holidays are off-peak all day.
Yes if you make ten or more peak round trips in a month. In zone 4 the monthly costs $271.50, while twenty peak one-way tickets cost $275.00. The ratio is almost the same in every Westchester zone.
The MTA adds a surcharge of $7.75 to $8.50 for tickets sold on board. From zone 4 a peak ticket bought on the train costs $22.00 instead of $13.75. Stations without ticket machines are exempt.
Children under 5 ride free. Up to four children aged 5 to 17 ride for $1 each under the Family Fare when they travel with a fare-paying adult who is at least 18 years old.
No, it costs the same. The MTA prices Westchester fares to or from Grand Central and Harlem-125th Street together, and both are in zone 1, so the choice depends only on where you are going in Manhattan.
In short, the boarding station sets the zone and the clock sets the rate: $13.75 peak or $10.25 off-peak from zone 4.
