Prudential Center From Newark Penn Station: NJ Transit and PATH

Prudential Center sits two blocks west of Newark Penn Station, where a PATH ride costs a flat $3.25 and an NJ Transit ride is priced by zone. The arena names five services in one sentence and then gives a single door to walk back to. What no page joins up is which rail line reaches which Newark station, and what each operator charges for the same platform. That join is what follows, built from pages published by the arena, by NJ Transit and by the Port Authority.

Five services, two Newark stations and one door for most of them

Newark Penn Station is served by NJ Transit rail, PATH, Amtrak, the Newark Light Rail and buses, and Prudential Center sends every one of those arrivals to the same door. To exit toward the station the arena names the Citizens Tower on the northeast corner, near Sections 20-22, 130-133 or 231-233.

For the other station the instruction changes. To reach public transit buses to Broad Street Station, guests are told to exit onto Edison Place or Lafayette Street and go half a block west to Broad Street, according to the Prudential Center A-Z Guide, checked September 2026. Two stations, two doors, and no walking time attached to either one.

One consequence of that single door is worth carrying in advance. Storage lockers cost $8 to $10 and stand outside the M&M’s Tower and Lafayette Street entrances, which are not the door a train arrival is pointed at. Anyone traveling with a bag near the limit should walk the extra side of the block, and the measurements are set out in our guide to the Prudential Center bag rules.

Newark Penn Station and Newark Broad Street sit on different NJ Transit lines

Three lines reach Newark Penn Station without a change, the Northeast Corridor, the North Jersey Coast Line and the Raritan Valley Line, according to NJ Transit. Two more, the Morris and Essex Line and the Montclair-Boonton Line, run instead to Newark Broad Street Station. Main-Bergen County and Pascack Valley passengers take the train to Secaucus Junction and transfer to a southbound train, one stop from Newark Penn.

The arena compresses all of that into a claim of direct service to Newark on six rail lines, more than two dozen bus routes and the Newark Light Rail. The count is close, but the distinction it drops is the expensive one. Five of those lines reach a Newark station directly, and two of the five arrive on the wrong side of downtown for the Citizens Tower.

The Newark Light Rail is the published repair. NJ Transit calls it the primary way to move between Newark Penn Station and Newark Broad Street Station, and prices it at $1.90 for an adult one-way, or $0.85 for a ticket between the underground stops at Warren Street, Washington Street, Military Park and Newark Penn. A rail ticket marked for travel via Secaucus, between the Morris and Essex or Montclair-Boonton lines and the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast Line or Raritan Valley Line, covers that hop at no additional cost. Drivers reading the same corner from the other direction will want our breakdown of Prudential Center parking.

A Manhattan ride costs $6.30 on NJ Transit and $3.25 on PATH

Two railroads carry passengers from Manhattan to the same Newark building and price the trip differently. Under the fares effective July 1, 2026, NJ Transit puts Penn Station Newark and Newark Broad Street in Zone 2 from New York Penn Station, at $6.30 for an adult one-way, $2.90 for a senior or disabled one-way, and $12.60 round trip. Secaucus Junction, in Zone 1, is $5.05.

PATH does not measure distance at all. The Port Authority publishes a full one-way fare of $3.25 across the whole system, $1.60 for seniors aged 65 and older and for riders with qualifying disabilities, and free travel for children aged 5 and under. From the World Trade Center that buys the same Newark platform for roughly half the NJ Transit price.

The payment method changed days before this season. As of September 1, 2026, all SmartLink Cards and MetroCards stopped being accepted at PATH turnstiles, and the fare is now paid through TAPP, either with a TAPP Card or by tapping a contactless card, phone or wearable at the gate. Tickets on the NJ Transit side still come from the NJ TRANSIT App, station vending machines and ticket windows.

Prudential Center times the PATH ride and never times the two block walk

The arena does publish minutes, but only for the train. Its transit page gives late night travel times of about 25 minutes from Newark to the World Trade Center, 25 minutes from Newark to Hoboken and 40 minutes from Newark to 33rd Street, with the note that Hoboken and 33rd Street passengers change at Journal Square.

PATH’s own weekday timetable, effective May 18, 2026, backs the first figure exactly. A train leaving Newark at 11:20 pm reaches the World Trade Center at 11:45 pm, a 25 minute ride, and the Port Authority states that PATH operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What stays unpublished is the walk. The distance appears as a short two blocks east of the arena on one page and as two blocks west of the station on another, and Prudential Center attaches no minutes to either sentence. The 25 minute PATH ride gets a published journey time and the two block walk does not.

The 11:30 pm example on the arena transit page names a departure PATH does not run

Late night advice on that page runs through a worked example. A passenger taking the 11:30 pm from Newark changes at Journal Square, catches an 11:43 connection and arrives in Hoboken at 11:53 pm or at 33rd Street at 12:09 am. The connection times are plausible. The departure is not on the timetable.

Every published Newark to World Trade Center table the Port Authority currently posts, weekday and weekend alike, brackets that minute with the same pair of departures, 11:20 pm and 11:55 pm. There is no 11:30 pm train, and nothing reaches Journal Square at 11:43 pm either. A rider who plans around the arena’s example misses the 11:20 pm by 10 minutes and then waits 25 more for the 11:55 pm. Getting out after the final buzzer is a separate problem, with its own crowd release and a designated rideshare zone, and it belongs to our guide to leaving Prudential Center after an event.

Stale text sits at the top of the same page, too, in the form of a notice that all NJ TRANSIT rail service is suspended because of a strike, dated May 16, 2025. NJ Transit’s own status board showed every rail line, including the Northeast Corridor and the Morris and Essex Line, running on time when this was checked in September 2026.

Three planning links on the arena page and what each one returns

The A-Z Guide closes its transit entry by sending readers to njtransit.com/prudentialcenter, pathrail.com or amtrak.com. Followed in September 2026, the first resolves to NJ Transit’s general Newark destination page, which names Prudential Center once in an opening sentence and then spends the rest of its length listing bus routes ward by ward. No Prudential Center page sits behind that address.

The second address answers nothing over a secure connection and, over plain http, redirects to the Port Authority’s PATH site at panynj.gov/path. The third, amtrak.com, reset the connection on every automated request tried, so no Amtrak fare, departure or platform appears anywhere on this page. Amtrak is one of the five services the arena names, and the only one whose numbers are missing here.

PATH describes the station in its own words, and the wording does not match its neighbor’s. Its Newark station page lists connections to NJ Transit trains, Amtrak trains, Greyhound buses, the Newark City Subway, local and private bus lines and taxis, and notes that the restrooms sit on the ground level of Newark Penn Station and are managed by NJ Transit. NJ Transit calls the same line the Newark Light Rail, formerly the Newark City Subway.

Which approach wins from Midtown, the World Trade Center, Hoboken and Broad Street

From Midtown Manhattan, NJ Transit wins on simplicity. One seat from New York Penn Station to Penn Station Newark at $6.30 leaves a passenger two blocks from the Citizens Tower with nothing to transfer, and the criterion is that a saved change beats a saved dollar when doors open 60 to 90 minutes before an event.

From Lower Manhattan, PATH wins outright. A flat $3.25 and a 25 minute ride from the World Trade Center undercut the NJ Transit fare by roughly half, and the line runs all night, which neither the Newark Light Rail nor the commuter timetables promise. Hoboken splits the answer. A one-seat NJ Transit ride from Hoboken to Penn Station Newark is $4.20, while PATH charges $3.25 and imposes a change at Journal Square, so the fare favors PATH by $0.95 and the clock favors NJ Transit.

Arriving on the Morris and Essex Line or the Montclair-Boonton Line, the Newark Light Rail wins over the bus, at $1.90 or at nothing at all when the ticket is marked via Secaucus. Riders coming from the north through Secaucus Junction pay $5.05 for the last leg, at the same transfer point that governs the very different trip in our Newark Penn Station to MetLife Stadium guide.

Details from three operators that change where a Newark arrival stands

  • Arena doors open approximately 60 to 90 minutes before the start of an event, per Prudential Center, so a train that lands 45 minutes early lands after the queue has formed.
  • The $0.85 Newark Light Rail underground ticket, valid between Warren Street, Washington Street, Military Park and Newark Penn, is sold only at ticket vending machines and is not accepted outbound between 4 pm and 6 pm on weekdays.
  • A monthly NJ Transit rail pass valued at $67 or more is valid on any light rail line or bus up to the number of zones printed on it, which covers the Broad Street hop without a second purchase.
  • PATH staffs Passenger Information Agents at Newark Station at all times and publishes accessible indoor navigation there through GoodMaps, which is more than the arena publishes about its own entrances.
  • PATH’s 9 St. and 23 St. stations in Manhattan close nightly from 12 am to 5 am, so a late return toward Greenwich Village ends at Christopher St., 14 St. or 33 St. instead.
  • The Citizens Tower carries a street address of its own at 60 Edison Place, while the M&M’s Tower carries the arena’s mailing address at 25 Lafayette Street, which is the one a car app will accept.
  • Guest Services answers on 973-757-6000, the only staffed number Prudential Center publishes for a question its transit page does not cover.

What goes wrong between the Newark Penn platform and 25 Lafayette Street

  • Trusting the arena’s transit page as current. Its strike notice is dated May 16, 2025, and NJ Transit rail was running normally in September 2026.
  • Boarding a Morris and Essex or Montclair-Boonton train and expecting Newark Penn Station. Both stop at Newark Broad Street, which is a $1.90 light rail ride or a bus away from the Citizens Tower.
  • Building a return around the 11:30 pm PATH departure in the arena’s example. The published departures either side of it are 11:20 pm and 11:55 pm.
  • Carrying a MetroCard for the PATH turnstile. Acceptance ended on August 31, 2026, and only TAPP or a contactless card, phone or wearable opens the gate now.
  • Walking to the Citizens Tower with an oversized bag. The lockers, at $8 to $10, sit outside the two entrances on the far side of the building.
  • Waiting for a published walking time. Both arena pages describe the distance in blocks and give minutes only for the 25 minute PATH ride to the World Trade Center.
  • Reading njtransit.com/prudentialcenter as an arena page. It is NJ Transit’s Newark city guide, and the ward by ward bus tables on it never return to the arena.

Editorial note: prices, schedules, and policies on this page were checked against the official sources named in the text in September 2026. Venues, airports, and transit agencies change them without notice; confirm with the operator before you travel. Westchester Ride does not sell tickets or parking and does not accept payment to rank any operator.

How do you get from Newark Penn Station to Prudential Center?

Walk two blocks west. The A-Z Guide places Newark Penn Station a short two blocks east of the building and sends guests to the Citizens Tower on the northeast corner, near Sections 20-22, 130-133 or 231-233, checked September 2026. No walking time in minutes appears on any Prudential Center page.

What does the train to Newark Penn Station cost?

NJ Transit charges $6.30 for an adult one-way from New York Penn Station to Penn Station Newark under the fares effective July 1, 2026, with $2.90 for a senior or disabled fare. PATH charges a flat $3.25 one-way from any of its stations, or $1.60 reduced.

Does PATH still accept a MetroCard for a trip to Newark?

No. The Port Authority publishes that SmartLink Cards and MetroCards stopped being accepted at PATH turnstiles as of September 1, 2026, with acceptance ending on August 31. Fares are now paid through TAPP, using a TAPP Card or a contactless card, phone or wearable at the gate.

Which NJ Transit lines reach Newark Penn Station directly?

Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast Line and Raritan Valley Line trains reach Newark Penn Station without a change, according to NJ Transit. Morris and Essex and Montclair-Boonton trains stop at Newark Broad Street instead, and Main-Bergen County and Pascack Valley riders change at Secaucus Junction, one stop away.

Can you walk to Prudential Center from Newark Broad Street Station?

Prudential Center publishes no walking distance from Newark Broad Street Station. It describes that link as frequent bus and Light Rail service, and for buses it sends guests out onto Edison Place or Lafayette Street and half a block west to Broad Street, checked September 2026.

Does PATH run overnight from Newark Penn Station?

PATH operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Its published weekday Newark to World Trade Center timetable lists evening departures at 10:45 pm, 11:20 pm and 11:55 pm, then roughly every 40 minutes overnight from 12:30 am, on a ride of about 25 minutes.

An arena that measures its own approach in blocks and its neighbor’s trains in minutes has shown where its interest stops. Newark Penn Station is the cheap part of the trip and the documented part, and the uncertainty sits in the two blocks nobody has timed.
